The Effect of Nature-Based Practices on Preschool Children's Value Acquisition / Doğa Temelli Uygulamaların Okul Öncesi Dönem Çocuklarının Değer Edinimi Üzerindeki Etkisi
Abstract
This research is a quasi-experimental study with a pretest-posttest and control group that aims to determine the effects of nature-based practices on children's value acquisitions. The independent variable of the research is the ‘‘Nature-Based Activity Program’’ prepared by the researchers; the dependent variable is the value acquisitions of children that turn into behaviors. The study group of the research consists of 44 preschool children, 22 in the experimental group and 22 in the control group, aged between 60-72 months, attending an independent kindergarten in the city center of Diyarbakır. Children in the experimental group participated in a 12-session “Nature-Based Activity Program” prepared in line with the 12 universal values (love, respect, responsibility, tolerance, freedom, peace, happiness, honesty, cooperation, humility, simplicity and unity) in the “Living Values Education Program” supported by UNESCO. The Nature-Based Activity Program was inspired by Rousseau's nature-based education approach. The program was planned to be implemented in 2 sessions per week. The duration of each session is 90 minutes. In each session, there are three parts: the warm-up phase, the main activity phase and the reinforcement phase, which are based on nature-based practices that support each other and aim to achieve the target value of the session. The children in the control group continued their daily education routines. The research data were collected with the “Values in Behavior Scale”. The scale was applied to both the experimental group and the control group children as a pre-test, post-test, and retention test. As a result of the analyses, it was determined that there was a significant difference between the post-test and retention test scores of the children in the experimental and control groups in favor of the experimental group. The significant difference between the post-test and retention test mean scores of the children in the experimental and control groups shows that nature-based education practices will contribute more to the value teaching process. Based on the research results, suggestions were made for practitioners and researchers.
