Perceptions of School Principals Regarding Their Schools (A Study of a Swot Analysis) / Okul Müdürlerinin Okullarına İlişkin Algıları (Bir Swot Analizi Çalışması)

Abstract

In this study, based on the perspective of SWOT analysis, when school principals compared their schools with other schools. The study aims to determine school principals views on the advantages/strengths, disadvantages/weaknesses, opportunities and threats of their schools. The research was designed according to the case study, one of the qualitative approaches. In this context, the study group of the research consists of 66 school principals working in public preschool, primary, secondary and high schools in Malatya in the 2021-2022 academic year. Maximum variation sampling technique was used to determine the study group. Research data were collected through a semi-structured interview form consisting of four open-ended questions. The data were analyzed by using descriptive and content analysis techniques. Data saturation was taken into account for the determined themes and categories. In order to increase the reliability of the research, first of all, the questions and the number of questions were determined by taking expert opinions during the preparation process of the research questions. As for the advantages/strengths of the school, the school principals primarily mentioned the opportunities and position of their schools, the teachers of the school in the second place, and the students in the third place. In terms of the disadvantaged/weak aspects of their schools, school principals expressed the situation and location of their school in the first place, the students of the school in the second place, and the parents in the third place. As a result of the research, school principals found their schools both advantageous/strong; both the disadvantage/weak side; see it as both an opportunity and a threat. In this context, it is recommended to conduct research to determine what inequalities are due to the opportunities and location of schools.
