Abstract

The ability to use language is a fundamental skill that humans use to communicate, express their thoughts, and understand others, and it is an essential part of human intelligence. This crucial tool of cultural richness for societies is constantly evolving and changing. People must communicate with those in their immediate surroundings and others worldwide in today's globalized world. Learning a foreign language is vital for communicating with people who speak other languages. Nowadays, globalization and advancements in technology have made it easier to learn languages other than one's native language. Using music as a teaching tool is an essential technique among the methods used for language education. Studies show that using music in language education has positive effects, particularly when researchers relate the grammar structure in language to the rules found in music. Researchers have found that students improve their attitude towards the subject matter as a result. This study aims to analyze the songs in English language textbooks used in the second grade in state schools. The songs in the textbook approved by the Ministry of National Education Curriculum Board in 2018 were used as the data for this study. The songs were analyzed using the document analysis method after being written in musical notation with a note-writing program. It was found that the analyzed songs were mainly composed in the key of C major with 4/4 rhythms and six-note intervals. Based on the results obtained, the analyzed songs can help students have fun while learning English and reinforce the concepts taught in the unit. Moreover, the findings of this analysis can contribute to music education. Future research should experimentally investigate the effects of song teaching in English education and examine their impact. Additionally, the use of songs in English education should be noticed.
