An Examination of the 4th Grade Primary School Students’ Views and Attitudes towards Respect and Tolerance for the Emotions and Thoughts
Abstract
The major aim of this research is to identify the fourth grade primary school students’ views and attitudes towards respect and tolerance for the emotions and thoughts. A convergent parallel pattern, one of the mixed research methods, was used in the study. The quantitative research sample constitutes 492 fourth grade primary school students who study within the province of Elazig and who were selected through the random sampling method. The qualitative sample of the study is consisted of 15 primary school students selected by convenience sampling method. The research deployed three data collection tools: Personal information form, a semi-structured interview form and the "A Scale for the Attitudes towards Respect and Tolerance for the Emotions and Thought". Descriptive statistics and multivariate analysis of variance were used during quantitative data analysis, and content analysis was preferred for the analysis of qualitative data. No significant difference has been found between students’ respect for thoughts subdimension in terms of gender; whereas students’ respect for emotions and tolerance vary across gender. The difference has been determined to be in favor of female students. There has been no significant difference in respect to the subdimensions of respect for emotions and thoughts in terms of mother occupation status, yet a significant difference has been found in the subdimension of tolerance in favor of those whose mothers work. Likewise, students’ views regarding respect for emotions and tolerance do not differ depending upon father occupation status, while a significant difference exists in terms of the respect for emotions.
