The Relationship Between Compulsive Online Buying and Self-Compassion Levels of University Students / Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Kompulsif Çevrimiçi Satın Alma Davranışları ve Öz Duyarlık Düzeyleri
Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between self-compassion and online compulsive buying behaviors of university students. For this purpose, a relational screening model was used to examine the role of self-compassion of university students in predicting compulsive online buying behavior. The study group consisted of 226 university students studying at Ondokuz Mayıs University in the 2024-2025 academic year. 168 (74.3%) of the participants were female and 58 (25.7%) were male. The average age was 20.91. The research data were obtained using the Self-Compassion Scale and the Online Compulsive Buying Scale. Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, Pearson Moment Correlation Coefficient and MANOVA were used in the analysis of the data. According to the results of Multiple Linear Regression Analysis, the sub-dimensions of the self-compassion scale explain approximately 28% of the total variance explained for online compulsive buying scores. The self-compassion sub-dimension and the over-identification sub-dimension are significant predictors of online compulsive buying scores; It is seen that the self-judgment, sharing awareness, isolation and consciousness sub-dimensions are not significant predictors of online compulsive buying scores. The findings are discussed in the light of literature. It has been interpreted that individuals with low self-compassion may spend to fill emotional voids and that they may provide psychological relief in the short term through purchasing. This has been interpreted as providing temporary relief to the individual and thus encouraging more purchasing behavior. In addition, there is no significant difference between the self-compassion and online compulsive buying scores of university students according to gender. In the literature, there are contradictory results regarding the effect of gender; it can be said that this is due to the multidimensional structure of individuals' behaviors and that the psychological state of the individual and environmental factors also play an important role here
