Developing the Media Literacy Reflective Thinking Scale (MLRTS): A Validity and Reliability Study / Medya Okuryazarlığına Yönelik Yansıtıcı Düşünme Ölçeği’nin (MOYDÖ) Geliştirilmesi: Geçerlik ve Güvenirlik Çalışması

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to develop a valid and accurate measurement tool to assess social studies pre-service teachers' reflective thinking skills regarding media literacy. Participants in this study included 708 social studies pre-service teachers enrolled in the faculty of education for the fall semesters of the 2020–2021 and 2021–2022 academic years. Data from 389 teacher candidates was used in the exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and data from 319 teacher candidates was used in the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In addition, test-retest analyses were conducted on the data set of 40 teacher candidates who were not included in the EFA and CFA. EFA and CFA were employed to ascertain the construct validity, and expert feedback was obtained to confirm the content and face validity of the research.EFA revealed a structure consisting of 5 factors and 21 items that explained 54% of the overall variance. The five factors were identified as "noticing, critical thinking, questioning, knowing, and transferring to life," respectively, taking into account both the theoretical framework and the content of the items gathered in the factors. The findings obtained from the CFA showed that the 21 items and five-factor structure of the Media Literacy Reflective Thinking Scale (MLRTS) had sufficient fit indices. The Cronbach alpha, test-retest, and composite reliability methods were used to examine the reliability of the measurements obtained from the MLRTS sub-factors, and the reliability coefficients obtained were found to be within acceptable limits. Item analysis was performed to determine the predictive power of the items on the scale and their discrimination levels. As a result of the analysis, it was seen that the corrected item-total correlations ranged between.33 and.63, and the t-values related to the differences in the item scores of the 27% lower and upper groups were significant when all items in the scale were examined. Based on the study's findings, MLTRS can be described as a measurement tool that offers valid and accurate measurements.
