Rhetorical Structure, Tense and Voice Features of Article Abstracts in Educational Sciences / Eğitim Bilimleri Makale Özetlerinin Sözbilimsel Yapısı, Kip ve Çatı Özellikleri
Abstract
Abstracts, the most-read parts of the articles, have been the subject of different studies; however, the studies that have analysed only Turkish article abstracts are very few. This study aims to perform rhetorical structure analysis of research article abstracts in educational sciences and to investigate the linguistic features of the moves. The study examined 60 abstracts published in four leading journals. The analysis of the abstracts was carried out using the model adapted by Pho (2008) from Santos (1996). The results reveal that the moves of purpose, methods and results are included in all abstracts, while the introduction move and conclusion move are included in 30% and 58% of the abstracts, respectively. Results was found to be the longest move. The results also show that researchers prefer present continuous (-mAktA) and present simple tenses in the introduction move, past and present simple tenses in the purpose move and past tense in the other three moves. There has been found a close relationship between the tenses and voices of the sentences: sentences in the past tense are predominantly formed in passive, while those in present continuous (-mAktA) and present simple are predominantly formed in active voice. Common sentence patterns across moves were also identified. Important features of the abstracts revealed in this study should be incorporated into academic writing courses and students need to be taught about rhetorical structures of the abstracts, the common sentence patterns of the moves and how to form these sentences using appropriate verbs, tense and voice. We hope that the present study will provide important contributions to abstract writing of the prospective academicians doing their postgraduate studies.
