Abstract

Abstract The aim of this study is to determine the awareness of 3rd and 4th grade primary school students regarding financial literacy skills and to examine their financial literacy levels based on various variables. In this research, a sequential explanatory design, one of the mixed-methods research types, was used. The quantitative part of the study used a survey model, while the qualitative part employed a phenomenological design. For the collection of quantitative data, a convenience sampling technique was used, and 196 students from 3rd and 4th grades in primary schools affiliated with the Samsun Provincial Directorate of National Education during the 2023-2024 academic year were included in the study. For the collection of qualitative data, criterion sampling, one of the purposive sampling methods, was used, and 10 students, selected voluntarily from the 196 students who completed the scale, were included in the study group. In addition, the "Marmara Financial Literacy Attitude and Behavior Scale" developed by Sarıgül (2015) was used to collect the quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected through a semi-structured interview form consisting of 10 open-ended questions prepared by the researchers. The quantitative data of the research were analyzed using the SPSS data analysis program and ANOVA test according to the variables of parental education level, maternal occupation, and paternal occupation. The qualitative data obtained from student interviews were analyzed using content analysis. The results of the study revealed that male students had a higher level of financial literacy compared to female students, and 3rd grade students had higher financial literacy attitudes than 4th grade students. Additionally, according to the findings from student interviews, it was determined that students found their pocket money sufficient, made plans when spending their pocket money, and most of them saved part of their pocket money rather than spending it all. Moreover, students demonstrated conscious consumer behaviors before and during shopping. Based on all the results, it can be concluded that the financial literacy levels of the students were above average. Keywords: Financial literacy, Primary school, Social studies, Skills training
