The Effects of the Flipped Classroom Model Applied in the Research Methods Course in Post-graduate Programs on Students / Lisansüstü Programlarda Araştırma Yöntemleri Dersinde Uygulanan Ters Yüz Sınıf Modelinin Öğrenciler Üzerindeki Etkileri
Abstract
The purpose of the study was to uncover the effects of the Research Methods course, in which flipped classroom model (FCM) is applied, on the research self-efficacy of students in graduate education science programs. It was also aimed to find out how the effect of FCM on Research Method in graduate education is on learning outcomes. The study was conducted with mixed design, a single-group pre-test-post-test experimental design and case study. A total of 11 students in educational sciences programs constituted the study group. Research self-efficacy data were collected with the Research Self-Efficacy Scale that was developed by Tuncer and Özeren (2012). Qualitative data for examining the effects of the Research Methods course on learning outcomes were obtained with the “Research Proposal Reports”, “Research Methods Learning Outcomes Evaluation Form” and “Research Method Opinions Form”. For the students to prepare for the course, the Research Method lecture videos for each week’s learning outcomes and contents were uploaded to the Learning Management System one week before each lesson. Activities for learning outcomes were performed in face-to-face lessons for three hours a week in the computer laboratory where each student had a computer for nine weeks. The data were analyzed with the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test, Content Analysis, and Descriptive Analysis Technique. In the present study, it was concluded that the Research Method course in postgraduate education science students with FCM had a positive effect on the research self-efficacy of students. When the study results are evaluated in integrity, it was observed that the Research Method course with FCM has positive effects on both research self-efficacy and learning outcomes in graduate education science students. It is recommended to spread FCM practices in post-graduate Research Method courses.
