Abstract

Energy has become one of the most important elements necessary for the development of countries with the industrial revolution. From this point of view, many countries have encouraged scientific research on energy. Transferring the experiences obtained as a result of these researches to future generations has become a necessity over time. Today, many countries include energy education in their curricula starting from early childhood. The main purpose of energy education is for students to acquire cognitive, affective and behavioural skills related to energy-related issues. The transition period from primary school to secondary school covers a developmental period in which students begin to understand abstract concepts, emotional awareness becomes apparent and they reach the physical maturity necessary to exhibit conscious behaviours. For this reason, it is important to reveal the cognitive, affective and kinesthetic development of 5th grade students regarding energy-related topics. The aim of this study is to develop a measurement tool to determine the energy literacy levels of 5th grade students in the context of science Curriculum. The sample of the study consisted of 5th grade students (N=304) studying in two secondary schools in Ağrı province. In this study, a measurement tool consisting of three parts was developed by consulting expert opinions. The first part of the measurement tool consists of a "highly reliable" achievement test containing 32 multiple-choice questions to determine the cognitive development of students regarding energy literacy. The second part of the measurement tool consists of a "highly reliable" scale containing 16 items in 5-point Likert type to determine the affective development of students regarding energy literacy. The third part of the measurement tool consists of a "highly reliable" scale containing 22 items on a 5-point Likert scale to determine students' kinesthetic development related to energy literacy. In this research, it is recommended to develop measurement tools to determine the enrgy literacy levels of students at different grade levels.
