Comparison of Physics and Chemical Questions in the LGS (High School Entrance Exam) and TIMSS Exams Applied in Türkiye / Türkiye’de Uygulanan LGS ve TIMSS Sınavlarındaki Fizik ve Kimya Sorularının Karşılaştırılması
Abstract
For individuals and communities to adapt to the changes and advancements in the modern world and to continue the changes in a transparent manner, the education system of countries must be planned in this direction. In this sense, end of the term/year examinations have the utmost importance. For the purpose of centralised assessment and evaluation, eighth-grade pupils in Türkiye and around the globe take a variety of exams. By comparing national and international exams, each nation can get a better grasp of how their education system functions. Of these exams, LGS (high school entrance exam) is the national examination while the TIMSS is an international examination administered in Türkiye. The purpose of this research is to compare the physics and chemistry questions from the Sciences section of the 2019 LGS and TIMSS exams administered to the 8th Grade students. That said, the students’ success in the area of physics and chemistry have been evaluated separately, and the cognitive process steps of the questions asked in both exams were determined. The samples have been collected from 236 students during the 2020-2021 school term in Kars. The data from the samples have been analysed by the SPSS programme. The independent t-test, One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and the Pearson Correlation tests have been used to analyse the obtained data. The eta-squared (η2) formula was used to measure the effect size. The study discovered a relatively significant and positive correlation between the TIMSS and LGS scales. The steps of the cognitive process have also been examined separately. Overall, the students who participated in this study have been more successful at the TIMSS examination.
