Counseling’s Effect on Psychological Flexibility: A Quasi Experimental Study / Psikolojik Danışma’nın Psikolojik Esnekliğe Etkisi: Yarı-Deneysel bir Çalışma

Abstract

College students experience biopsychosocial, spiritual and economic issues from mild to severe levels. However, most of these students are not able to utilize professional mental health services to address their issues. Therefore, overall wellbeing of the students can decrease and/or these issues can turn into more severe psychopathology. Researchers showed that high psychological flexibility scores are related to overall wellbeing while low psychological flexibility scores are related with diverse psychological disorders. Our aim in this study was to examine how counseling service provided to college students affect their psychological flexibility level. In this study, we had a quasi-experimental design and a total of 164 students who comprised the sample: 133 in experimental and 31 in control group. In this current study, under professional supervision, 110 counselor candidates provided five sessions to each client in the experimental group. We used Turkish version of Acceptance and Action Questionnaire-II (AAQ-II) to examine the psychological flexibility. We use Multivariate Analysis of Covariance technique for data analysis. Overall, following the intervention, the results indicated that the psychological inflexibility scores, for the experimental group was significantly lower than the control group. The results mean following the intervention, psychological flexibility scores were higher for the experimental group compared to the control group. Based on the results, controlling for the pretest, being in the control or experimental group explained 12% (η2= .120) of the variance in the posttest for psychological inflexibility. This is a moderate effect size based on Cohen’s d (1988; 2013). As a result, receiving counseling service seems significantly increasing the psychological flexibility scores for this sample. There is lack of such research in Turkey that makes this study very important. We discussed research results and suggested implications for future research, supervision, and advocacy in mental health.
