Disadvantaged Groups in Social Studies Curriculum and Social Studies Textbooks / Sosyal Bilgiler Dersi Öğretim Programı ve Ders Kitaplarında Dezavantajlı Gruplar

Abstract

The Social Studies course, which aims to assist individuals in realizing their social existence and to cultivate good individuals and good citizens, carries the most important characteristic of providing awareness about disadvantaged groups to students at the basic education level. The study aims to examine the Social Studies Curriculum (MEB, 2018) and social studies textbooks in terms of disadvantaged groups. In the research, the concept of disadvantaged groups was examined based on the literature to determine its scope. The disadvantaged groups were defined as "women, individuals with disabilities, refugees, children, and groups with language, religion, and racial differences." Later, the Social Studies Curriculum and textbooks for grades 4, 5, 6, and 7 were scanned to examine how disadvantaged groups are addressed in them. In this qualitative research, data were collected through document analysis. The data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, and tables were created. Additionally, in the textbooks, visuals associated with disadvantaged groups were presented with their explanations. According to the overall findings, it was determined that the Social Studies Curriculum did not directly address disadvantaged groups. However, it was found that the achievements and explanations related to individual differences, children's rights, fundamental rights and freedoms, respect for diversity, and social cohesion could be associated with disadvantaged groups. The research findings indicate that the 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th-grade textbooks included references to disadvantaged groups through sample texts and visuals in the learning domains of "Individual and Society," "Active Citizenship," and "Global Connections. The most prominently addressed disadvantaged groups are children and refugees. Based on the findings, it can be suggested that for the development of students' awareness regarding social cohesion and respect for diversity towards disadvantaged groups, the Social Studies Curriculum and the content of textbooks should include clearer and more concrete explanations about disadvantaged groups.
