Opinions of Fifth Grade Students on Science Lessons Taught Through Distance Education / Uzaktan Eğitim Aracılığıyla İşlenen Fen Bilimleri Dersine Yönelik Beşinci Sınıf Öğrencilerinin Görüşleri

Abstract

The science curriculum is based on experimentation and includes abstract concepts. Therefore, it can be said that students have difficulties in science subjects when the lesson is delivered by means of distance education. Since experiments are important in science lessons, it is thought that not conducting experiments in the distance education process makes it difficult for students to learn science subjects. It can be said that this is an important problem for effective science teaching. It is thought that revealing the problems encountered in science teaching in the distance education process from the eyes of the students will contribute to the literature. In this context, it is believed that it is important to determine the problems encountered in science teaching in the distance education process by the students who are at the center of learning. Revealing the impact of distance education on students’ science learning has gained importance. Thus, the aim of this research is to examine the opinions of fifth grade students about the science lessons taught my means of distance education. In this context, the participants of the study were selected from the fifth grade students (n=10) in a secondary school in the Turkish province of Van by the method of purposeful sampling. In order to collect in-depth research data, interviewing (as a qualitative data collection tool) was used within the context of the phenomenological approach. Content analysis was used to analyse the data. In the research study, fifth grade students stated that when they take lessons at home, they wake up later than usual and meet their basic needs comfortably. In addition, lecture videos, the question-answer method and common textbooks were used in the science lesson in the distance education process. On the other hand, students stated that they were away from their friends, effective learning did not take place, and they became dependant /addicted on technology and could not communicate with their families. The students also expressed problems they experienced, such as internet connection problems, weight gain, back and eye pain during the distance education process. Finally, they stated that effective learning did not occur because they could not conduct experiments in the science lesson taught by means of the distance education process. In the distance education process, it is recommended to limit the number of lessons to three or four hours during the day and to plan a lesson not exceeding 30 minutes
