The Effect of Secondary School Students' Digital Game Addictions on Self-Efficacy Levels: A Structural Equation Model Study / Ortaokul Öğrencilerinin Dijital Oyun Bağımlılıklarının Öz-Yeterlik Düzeylerine Etkisi: Yapısal Eşitlik Modeli Çalışması

Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the effect of secondary school students' digital game addictions on their self-efficacy levels. Another aim is to examine students' digital game addictions and self-efficacy in terms of different demographic variables. Probability-based random sampling method, which is included in the general survey model, which is widely used in quantitative research, was preferred in collecting the data of the study. The sample group of the research consists of 1015 (493 girls - 522 boys) students attending six different secondary schools in Sivas in the 2021-2022 academic year. The research data were obtained by applying the "Digital Game Addiction Scale for Children" and the "Self-Efficacy Scale for Children", which was adapted into Turkish, to secondary school students. The Cronbach Alpha value of the Digital Game Addiction Scale for Children was .78 in the scale development study, and 0.75 in this study; The Crobach Alpha value of the Self-Efficacy Scale for Children was determined as .86 in the scale development study and 0.87 in this study. The data obtained in the research; Kolmogorov-Smirnov normality test, unrelated groups t test, ANOVA test, Scheffe test, SEM and CFA analysis methods were applied. Considering the findings obtained as a result of the analyzes applied; It has been determined that students' digital game addictions and self-efficacy levels differ significantly according to gender, grade level, mother and father educational status variables. As a result of the SEM analysis applied, it was determined that students' digital game addictions had a significant effect on their self-efficacy perceptions. It has been determined that the direction of this effect is negative.
