The Reasons Affecting Academic Procrastination Behaviors of Prospective Teachers / Öğretmen Adaylarının Akademik Erteleme Davranışlarını Etkileyen Etmenler
Abstract
The general aim of this study is to investigate prospective teachers’ procrastination behaviors in terms of new dimensions. In this research, correlational research model was used. The population f the research includes students studying social sciences, preschool and primary school teacher training departments in Afyon Kocatepe University. And the sample of the study includes randomly chosen 411 prospective teachers from these departments. Necessary data for this research have been collected with the implementation of academic procrastination scale developed by Authors (2015). The scale consists of four sub-dimensions namely irresponsibility, the quality of perceived academic task, negative perception regarding instructors and academic perfectionism. Frequency, percentage, arithmetic average, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Scheffe test and correlation analysis have been conducted on data that was collected upon implementation. Based on research findings, it has been revealed that the academic procrastination behavior among pre-service instructors is partially caused by irresponsibility, the quality of perceived academic task, negative perception regarding instructors and academic perfectionism. According to analysis results based on total points with respect to gender, it has been observed that male pre-service instructors perform academic procrastination behavior significantly more than female pre-service instructors. When academic procrastination behaviors are examined in terms of academic achievements of pre-service instructors, it has been determined that there is an inverse meaningful relationship between the subdimensions of perceived quality of academic task as well as negative perception regarding instructors and academic achievement.
