Abstract

The rapid development of technology in today's world is influencing individuals' reading habits in diverse ways. A recent trend is the shift towards listening to audiobooks and podcasts instead of traditional reading. This shift is driven by the desire to multitask, be unbound by location or posture, and manage time effectively. This study examined the opinions of 13 university students with prior experience in listening to audiobooks and podcasts. Data were collected through a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers and analyzed using the MAXQDA 18 program, with content analysis employed as the data processing method. The study findings revealed that university students utilize this technology for several reasons, including effective time management, eye health protection, location and posture independence, enhanced mental activity, and improved concentration. It was noted that, compared to printed books, audiobooks and podcasts offer distinct aspects in terms of comprehension, ease of focus, and accessibility. Interestingly, students were found to listen to fictional literary texts more frequently than other genres. Additionally, students reported listening to audiobooks or podcasts while engaging in various activities, including exercising, leisure activities, traveling, relaxing, attempting to fall asleep, and performing household chores. Online platforms and advertisements were identified as the primary sources for encountering audiobooks and podcasts. Furthermore, participants emphasized the positive effects of audiobooks and podcasts on their speaking and listening skills. Notably, the study's findings were found to be consistent with data from other research in the literature.

Üniversite Öğrencilerinin Sesli Kitap ve Podcast Dinlemeye Yönelik Görüşlerinin İncelenmesi

Year 2023, Volume: 11 Issue: 4, 33 - 48, 30.12.2023
https://doi.org/10.29228/ijlet.73794
